Are You Working Your Dream Job?

May 2, 2018

Are you working your “dream job”? This is an interesting question. For some, they are working to work. To pay bills, to make money to survive and maybe have some left over at the end of the day to indulge a bit. Most work for the money, some work for the happiness. I think if you work for the happiness, the money should come as well. It’s up to you.

There was a recent survey that asked people if they would take a pay cut, or less money to work their “dream job”. I’m not sure that I am surprised by the results. Over half of the people said they would take a cut in pay to work their “dream job”. I think that's the difference between a JOB and a CAREER. For me, a job is just that. It can last a day, a week, a year, a lifetime, but ultimately it’s a job. You go to work, you do your job, you get a check, thank you. Don’t get me wrong, there is NOTHING wrong with that, as long as you know the reality of that and you accept that and you are happy with that, more power to you. If you have the opportunity to do what you love, what you are passionate about, and get a check for that as well- jackpot!

Many times you ask people, “What do you do for a living?”, and you may get answers like “I work at XYZ store, but I’m really a singer.” Or “I work for XYZ, but I’m really into design work.” My reaction to that is why not go be a singer or go be a designer? To me, there is nothing more important than your happiness. It’s like the foundation for a house. If the floor is not solid, the rest of the house will come down at some point. Start with your passions and find a way to get paid for it, or CREATE your own way of getting paid for it.

I was good at two things growing up. Sports, and music. I chose music for my career. For a long time now, I have had the pleasure to work with some incredible people. I have learned so much over the last 30+ years, and I am still learning today. I’m still learning about work/career for me too.

Hey, if you have to work a “job” to pay for the bills while you work on your passions, do it! Consider it your investment in YOU! Nobody else will do that for you.
