Today In Pop Music: June 25 – Michael Jackson Died 5 Years Ago Today


1937 – Eddie Floyd (“Knock On Wood”, wrote “634-5789” for Wilson Pickett)

1939 – Harole Melvin (“If You Don’t Know Me By Now’ – died 1997)

1940 – Clint Warwick (Moody Blues/bass – died 2004)

1945 – Carly Simon

1946 – Allen Lanier (Blue Oyster Cult/guitar – “Don’t Fear The Reaper”)

1954 – David Paich (Toto/vocals-keyboards)


1966 – The Beatles began a two week run atop Billboard’s Hot 100 with “Paperback Writer”.

1967 – 200 million people saw The Beatles perform “All You Need Is Love”, live via satellite as part of a worldwide tv hook up – ‘Our World’.  Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Gary Leeds, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash, and Keith Moon were among those providing background vocals.

1969 – The Hollies recorded “He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother”, written by Bobby Scott and Ben Russell, who was dying of cancer of the lymph nodes.  the pair met in person only three times, but managed to complete the song.  The recording also features a pre-fame Elton John on piano.

1977 – Marvin Gaye topped the Billboard Hot 100 with “Got To Give It Up”, his third chart topper.

1993 – Bruce Springsteen was a surprise guest on David Letterman’s final show as host of NBC’s Late Night.

2009 – Michael Jackson died after suffering heart failure at his home in Beverly Hills.  The eighth child of the Jackson family is credited with transforming the music video into an art form and promotional tool.  His ‘Thriller’ album is the world’s best selling record of all time with sales of over 50 million.  Hard to believe it’s been five years since he died.  Michael Jackson was only 50 years old.
