1999 – Eric Clapton put 100 of his guitars up for auction at Christie’s in New York city to raise money for his drug rehab center in Antigua.His 1956 Fender Stratocaster named Brownie, which was used to record the original version of “Layla”, sold for $497,500.  In all, his collection brought in more than $5 million.  That record didn’t stand for long, because exactly 5 years later to the day, another Clapton Fender Stratocaster named ‘Blackie’, went at auction for $959,500, making it the most expensive guitar in the world.
