Minimation: Peter Frampton’s Own Wardrobe Malfunction

On Minimation, we comb through the archives of legendary New York radio station WNEW-FM and animate interviews with legendary rock artists.

This installment is taken from a 1992 interview with Peter Frampton, but he discussed a rather embarrassing wardrobe malfunction from his 1976 tour, during the height of his fame. This was animated for by Jakob Strunk of Strunk Cartoons

It may not have been the most famous wardrobe malfunction of all time, but certainly there were a lot of people in the audience when Peter Frampton split his pants onstage in Hartford, Conn. in 1976 during the Frampton Comes Alive era. In a rather Spinal Tap-ish moment that he still remembered very clearly sixteen years later, the singer/guitarist recalled falling off the front of the stage, and tearing his satin pants on the way back up.

Frampton, whose trousers are much more sensible these days, kicks off a summer tour in June; many of those dates he’s co-headlining with the Doobie Brothers. And on June 23, he’ll release Hummingbird in a Box, a collection of music that he composed for the Cincinnati Ballet. As far as we know, there were no costume mishaps at those performances. But we’ll always have Hartford.
