Today In Pop Music: April 22 – The Blues Brothers First TV Appearance


1936 – Glen Campbell

1951 – Paul Carrack (Ace – ‘How Long’/Mike and the Mechanics – ‘All I Need Is A Miracle’)


1957 – Elvis Presley’s iconic custom built ‘Music Gates’ were installed at his Graceland home in Memphis.

1966 – The Troggs ‘Wild Thing’ was released on two seperate record labels in the United States.  The combined efforts of Atco and Fontana records pushed the song to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  it went on to become a major influence on later garage rock and punk bands.

1969 – On the roof of The Beatles Apple building in London, John Lennon changed his middle name from Winston to Ono.

1989 – Madonna began a three week run atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Like A Prayer’, her seventh #1 hit.

2008 – It was revealed that 60’s British pop star Tommy Steele took Elvis Presley on a secret tour of London in 1958 after the two singers struck up a friendship.  When  Elvis flew to London for a day, Tommy took him around the city showing him famous city landmarks like the House of Parliment.  Until this story came out, Elvis fans had believed for a half century that the only time Elvis set foot in the UK was during a stop over at an airport in Scotland in March 1960.

2013 – Richie Havens, the singer who opened the 1969 Woodstock festival in 1969, and had a top 20 hit with his cover of The Beatles ‘Here Comes The Sun’ two years later, died of a heart attack at hs home in Jersey City.  He was 72.

1978 – John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd made their first appearance as Jake and Elwood, The Blues Brothers on ‘Saturday Night Live’, bringing the blues to a whole new generation of music lovers.
