Today In Pop Music: Buddy Holly’s Last Recordings


1931 – Sam Cooke – (singer/songwriter/producer – ‘Another Saturday Night’, ‘ ‘Only Sixteen’, ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’)

1940 – Addie Harris (The Shirelles – ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’, ‘Soldier Boy’ – died 1982)

1953 – Steve Perry (Journey – lead singer/solo  – ‘Don’t Stop Believing’, ‘Oh Sherrie’)

1960 – Michael Hurchence (Inxs – lead singer – ‘Need You Tonight’, ‘New Sensation’ – died 1997)


1966 – The Beach Boys began recording ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ for their ‘Pet Sounds’ album.

1967 – The Monkees performed live for the very firs time at The Cow Palace in San Francisco to a sold out crowd.

1969 – After an uninspiring series of sessions at Twickenham Film Studios, The beatles moved to Apple studios in London to begin recording and continue filming the ‘Let It Be’ project.  Billy Preston was brought into the sessions and became the only outside musician to receive label credit with The Beatles on the ‘Get Back’ single.

1972 – Don McLean began a seven week run at #1 on the Billboard album chart with his ‘American Pie’ album.

1983 – The new 24 hour music channel network began broadcasting to the West Coast after Group w Cable in Los Angeles picked them up.

2012 – Adele broke a chart record that had been held by The Beatles and Pink Floyd.  Her second album’21’ spent 16 weeks at #1 on the Billboard album chart, equaling the success of the ‘Titanic’ soundtrack  Adele bested The Beatles ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts club Band’ and ‘Pink floyd’s ‘The Wall’ which had previously held the record at 15 weeks,

1959 – On a tape recorder he’s bought from producer Norman Petty, Buddy Holly made his last recordings of songs he’d just written including ‘Peggy Sue Got Married’,’Crying Waiting Hoping’, ‘That Makes It tough’, ‘That’s What They Say’ and ‘What To Do’.  Days later he was off to join the Winter Dance Party Tour, where he would be killed in a plane crash on February 9 – the day the music died.  the tapes would later be overdubbed and released.

This is what they originally sounded like – just Buddy and a guitar in his New York Apartment.
