1951 – Martha Davis (The Motels/singer – ‘Only the Lonely’, ‘Suddenly Last Summer’)

1952 – Melvyn Gale (Electric Light Orchestra/cello)

1967 – Lisa Velez (Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam)

1967 – The Rolling Stones appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, singing ‘Let’s Spend The Night Together’.  Ed’s producers objected to the lyrics and forced Mich to change the lyric to ‘let’s spend some time together’.  When Mick came to the revised lyric he rolled his eyes for the camera.  Ed was none too happy, and announced The Rolling Stones were banned from performing on his show ever again. Ed’s show lasted three more years.  The Stones are still rolling.

1972 – Don McLean began a four week run at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with his narrative of the day the music died.  Over 40 years later I’m still trying to piece together what the rest of the song means!

1983 – Australia’s Men At Work topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first of four weeks with ‘Down Under’, which brought Vegemite sandwiches in vogue here in the states, thankfully for a very short period of time.

1994 – Harry Nilsson  died in his sleep of heart failure after spending the previous da wny in the recording studio. in addition to hits that included ‘Everybody’s Talkin’, ‘Without You’, and ‘Coconut’, he also wrote hits for Three dog Night, The Monkees, and Badfinger.

1977 – The Eagles ‘Hotel California’  began an eight week run at #1 on the Billboard album chart, remaining on the list of best selling albums for 2 years.  The meaning of the song was revealed by Don Henley in the 2013 documentary ‘History of The Eagles’ when he stated Hotel California is about “a journey of innocence to experience….that’s all.”   Does it make any more sense to you now?  (me neither!)
