Today In Pop Music: November 21 – RCA Signs Elvis Dirt Cheap


1940 – Dr. John (real name: Malcom John Reennack – ‘Right Place Wrong Time’)

1948 – Lonnie Jordan (War – ‘The Cisco Kid’,’Low Rider’, ‘Summer’)

1950 – Livingston Taylor (‘I Will Be In Love With You’)


1970 – The Partridge Family began a three week run atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘I Think I Love You’.

1970 – On that same day across the pond,  two months after his death, Jimi Hendrix was #1 on the British singles chart with ‘Voodoo Child’, which failed to chart on the American Billboard Hot 100.

1974 – Wilson Pickett was arrested in New York City for possession of a dangerous weapon after he pulled out a gun during an argument.

1980 – Olivia Newton-John began a ten week streak at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Physical’.  it was her fourth #1 and went on to sell over two million copies, helped along by the video of the song.

1983 – Michael Jackson’s ground breaking 14 minute ‘Thriller’ video was premiered in Los Angeles.

1995 – The Beatles ‘Anthology1’ was released.

1955 – RCA Victor Records purchased Elvis Presley’s  Sun Records recording contract from owner/producer Sam Phillips for a then unheard of sum of $35,000.  Steve Sholes of RCA was called on the carpet at the time from worried execs at the label who asked him if they’d make their money back in a year, to which Steve responded ‘I hope so’.
