Today In Pop Music: November 7 – How Alan Freed Gave Johnny Rivers His Stage Name


1937 – Mary Travers (Peter Paul and Mary – ‘Leaving On A Jet Plane’ – died 2009)

1942 – Johnny Rivers (‘Memphis’,’Poor Side Of Town’,Baby I Need Your Lovin”)

1943 – Joni Mitchell – (real name: Roberta Anderson – ‘Help Me’, Big Yellow Taxi’)

1951 – Kevin Scott MacDonald (Cutting Crew – guitar – ‘I Just Died In Your Arms’)

1957 – John ‘Jellybean’ Benitez – (producer – ‘Who Found Who’)


1967 – The Beatles were at Abbey Road studios finishing up ‘Blue Jay Way’, ‘Flying’, and the title track to ‘Magical Mystery Tour’.  With only six songs in the film in England the soundtrack was released as a double-EP.  But here in the states Capitol Records squeezed the fans to by a full album by adding five of the six songs that had been released as singles that year.

1967 – Reg Dwight (Elton John) and his song writing partner Bernie Taupin required their parents to witness their signatures on their first contract with DJM publishing – they were both under 21 at the time.

1974 – Ted Nugent won a National Squirrel-shooting contest after picking off a squirrel at 150 yeads.

1987 – Tiffany became the youngest act to top the Billboard Hot 100 (16) with ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ since Michael Jackson  with ‘Ben’. (15)

2002 – Whitney Houston’s husband Bobby Brown was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, driving without a license, and having no proof of insurance after being stopped by police in Atlanta City.

Johnny Rivers, born John Ramistella, is celebrating a birthday today.  Born in Brooklyn and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  So how did he hook up with legendary dj Alan Freed who gave him his stage name?  Johnny explained it to me a couple of years ago.
