1960 – Johnny Horton, whose hit ‘The Battle Of New Orleans’ became the #1 hit of the entire year 1959, was killed in a car crash in Texas when he was hit head on a Texas road by a 19 year old driving a truck.

1966 – The Monkees topped the Billboard Hot for the first time with Last Train to Clarksville.  They would score two additional chart toppers with ‘I’m A Believer’ and ‘Daydream Believer’.

1967 – Robin Gibb was a passenger on a train that crashed in Southheast London killing 49 passengers and injuring 78 others.  robin was treated for shock.

1971 – The most identifiable phrase connected to Elvis Presley was uttered for the first time at the end of the first night of a 15-date North American tour.  When the last note was played at the Metropolitan Sports Center in Minneapolis, announcer Al Dvorin was asked to make an announcement to quiet the fans who continued to scream for an encore, to which Al said ‘Elvis has left the building’.

1988 – ‘The Locomotion’ became the first song to reach the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with three different versions, when Kylie Minogue’s version peaked at #3.  Previous versions by Little Eva and Grand Funk Railroad both hit #1.

2003 – Bobby Hatfield, high voice of The Rightous Brothers, was found dead in his hotel room 30 minutes before he was due on stage for a show in Kalamazoo.  He was 63.

1983 – Billy Joel was riding high on the charts with his hit ‘Uptown Girl’, which was initially written about his relationship with his then-girlfriend Elle MacPherson, but ended up also becoming about his soon to be wife Christie Brinkley, who was featured in the video.
