1971 – Ty Longley (Great White – ‘Once Bitten Twice Shy – died 2-20-03 in the Rhode Island fire that took 100 fans lives)


1954 – Elvis Presley made his first appearance on ‘The Grand Old Opry’.  Audience reaction was so poor the Opry’s manager told Elvis he should go back to driving a truck.  He didn’t.

1962 – The Beatles first formal recording session took place at Abbey Road studio.  Among the songs recorded were ‘Please Please Me’ and  ‘Love Me Do’.

1965 – Tough evening for the Who as they had their van stolen containing over $10,000 worth of equipment.  They had parked it outside the Battersea Dogs Home while they went inside to buy a guard dog.  The van was later recovered.  No word on whether they bought a dog.

1971 – Paul McCartney’s Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey became his first #1 hit here in the states.  The song was not released as a single in England.

1980 – A new line up of the group Yes (Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, and Trevor Horn) played the first of a three night sold out nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

1986 – After just getting his drivers license back after a five-year suspension, the Allman Brothers Band’s Gregg Allman was arrested for drunk driving.

2006 – Badfinger drummer Mike Gibbins (‘Come And Get It’, ‘No Matter What’) died in his sleep at his Florida home from a brain aneurysm.  He was 56.

2008 – Friends and family of Michael Jackson paid their last respects at a closed funeral at Forest Lawn.  Among the 200 invited guests were Elizabeth Taylor, Quincy Jones, ex wife Lisa Marie Presley, Macau;ay Cukin, and Motown fonder Berry Gordy.

1972 – John Lennon and Yoko Ono appeared on Jerry Lewis’ MDA Telethon singing two songs (and a third by Yoko): ‘Imagine’ and ‘Give peace A Chance’.  I wouldn’t have believed it until I saw a :35 clip from the broadcast which, to this point, is the only video that has turned up anywhere.

Frustrating, but better than nothing.
