Happy Together Tour In Town This Weekend – Gary Puckett Interview With A Big Surprise

It’s one of the top 5 shows in the valley to see this weekend as the fourth annual Happy Together tour makes a stop at Talking Stick Resort tomorrow night.  Odds are you know all the songs: Joy To the World, Happy Together, Mama Told Me, This Diamond Ring, Young Girl and Kicks, and a ton more.

In fact, this years line up has so many hits, (60+ top 40 hits including 6 that hit #1!) it would take a couple of nights to sing them all: The Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie, Chuck Negron formerly of  Three Dog Night, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Mark Lindsay former lead singer for Paul Revere and the Raiders, and Gary Puckett who used to wear those Civil War uniforms on stage with the Union Gap.

I’ve known Gary for almost 35 years, and though we lost touch for a while, we caught up with each other again a few weeks ago to catch up and talk about what he’s been doing, share a few stories, and talk about the upcoming show.  One of my favorite stories he tells is about the group’s reaction when the Civil War costumes were presented to the guys to wear on stage.

Here’s an easy conversation with a great talent and one of the really good guys in the business.  In a little over 15 minutes we covered how he prepares for his show, a connection with B.B.King, his Wednesday night bowling group, his friendship with the late Johnny Maestro, how he takes care of his voice, what he’s listening to today, why civil war uniforms may return to the stage at Talking Stick tomorrow night, and a very special surprise announcement that caught me completely off guard near the end of our conversation.  I’ll just say I’m very happy for him, and you will be too.

See you at Talking Stick for tomorrow night’s 8pm show.
