Tax Help: Filing For Free

Some of you LIKE to do your taxes and have started or already filed your 2012 taxes and are now waiting for that check in the mail.
For others, you may wait until the last minutes. (Usually those who wait until the last minute are those that need to PAY a little more into the IRS)

Some help may be on the way….

Here’s how to prepare federal income-tax returns at no cost:

Electronic tax forms. Anyone can input personal tax information on forms at, allowing for e-filing and faster refunds.

Free filing. People earning $57,000 or less annually can qualify to use free tax software that prompts them with questions, provides answers, supplies appropriate forms and does calculations. That means roughly 70percent of taxpayers qualify. Start the process at

In-person tax assistance at no cost is available to seniors and moderate-income people. For locations, go to and search for “VITA,” the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Or call 1-800-906-9887 (VITA/Tax Counseling for the Elderly) or 1-888-227-7669 (AARP tax help).

Federal tax forms and publications are free. You can read and download what you need at or order information by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676) weekdays from 7a.m. to 7p.m.
