Birthdays today include Scottsdale resident Sam Moore (of Sam and Dave fame) who’s a very youthful 77, and Rick Parfitt of Status Quo (Pictures of Matchstick Men) is 66. Melvin Franklin original bass singer for of the Temptations, would have been 70 today. He died in 1995.
October 12, 1955 – The Chrysler Corporation offered high fidelity record players in their 1956 line-up of cars. They weren’t a hit, and were discontinued in 1961.
October 12, 1957 – Little Richard publicly denounced rock and roll and soon after launched a gospel career that lasted until the mid-60’s.
October 12, 1965 – The Beatles recorded ‘Run For Your Life’ which was included on their ‘Rubber Soul’ album. John Lennon later admitted he had lifted a line of lyrics for the song from Elvis Presley’s ‘Baby Let’s Play House’ (I’d rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man…)
October 12, 1971 – Gene Vincent (Be Bop A Lula) died from a perforated ulcer.
October 12, 1997 – John Denver was killed when his experimental airplane ran out of gas and crashed off the coast of Monterey Bay, California.
October 12, 1969 – A dj on Detroit’s WKNR radio received a phone call from a listener who told him if he played The Beatles ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ backwards, you’ll hear John Lennon say the words ‘I buried Paul’, starting the world wide rumor Paul was dead.
I’ve listened to the segment in question, and backwards it sounds like gibberish, but played normally it could be interpreted as “I buried Paul”. Only one problem – John is actually saying ‘cranberry sauce’.
