George Michael will not be performing live for a while.

The singer who suffered a near-death experience last year is now seeking therapy for anxiety.

Yesterday (September 29), Michael took to his website to explain the sudden cancellations of his upcoming Australian dates.

“All I can say at this time is that since last year’s illness I have tried in vain to work my way through the trauma that the doctors who saved my life warned me I would experience,” he wrote. “They recommended complete rest and the type of post traumatic counseling which is available in cases like mine but I’m afraid I believed (wrongly) that making music and getting out there to perform for the audiences that bring me such joy would be therapy enough in itself.”

Last year, Michael spent a month in an Austrian hospital after contracting a vicious case of pneumonia that nearly killed him. The singer even based his latest song, “White Light” off of his upcoming sixth album, on the experience.

Michael admits he underestimated how difficult recovery would be, but does say the stage helped him get back on his feet.

“I was right to believe that the shows would bring me great happiness and that my voice would recover completely (I truly think that some of my recent performances have been my best ever),” he wrote.

But admits the only way he will truly get better is to seek treatment for the anxiety that has plagued him since leaving Austria last December.

“All that’s left for me to do is apologize to my wonderful Australian fan base and to promise faithfully that as soon as I complete these shows here in the UK I will receive the treatment which is so long overdue,” he wrote.

Michael’s current UK tour ends on October 17.
