Legendary singer-songwriter Paul Anka (Put Your Head On My Shoulder, She’s A Lady) is 71 today.  Did you know he wrote The Tonight Show Theme and got paid every time the band played it before Johnny Carson stepped out on stage?  That’s literally music to his ears!  Sax man David Sanborn is 67, original Jethro Tull bass guitarist Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond is 66, and singer Kate Bush is 54.

July 30, 1986John Denver was, according to Variety magazine, dropped from his record label RCA, after the release of his single titled “What Are We Making Weapons For“.  the song apparently upset the record company’s new owner, General Electric, who were one of the largest defense contractors in America at the time.

July 30, 2003Sam Phillips, the legendary fonder of Sun Records, and  discoverer of Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Ike Turner, B.B. King, and Jerry Lee Lewis died at age 80 of respiratory failure.

July 30, 1968The Beatles closed their Apple Botique in London after seven months of business, giving away all the stock on hand to the public and Apple staff…after the group and their wives and girlfriends helped themselves to the best stuff first.  Several years after the closing, Paul McCartney recalled the store’s opening day.
