Over 600 million have visited Disneyland since July 17, 1955.  I’ve been there well over a dozen times myself,  but that opening day was not the smooth running operation we know today.  The park was barely finished – and I do mean barely.  The concrete wasn’t yet dry, and more than double the crowd showed up than was expected.  The ceremonies were broadcast live across the country, which was no easy task considering the technology of the time.  But everyone survived, Disneyland got on the right track after the opening day disaster, and this kinescope survived so we can see how the park looked on that hot summer day 1955, when the vegetation had just been planted, the sidewalks were still settling, and Walt Disney presented the happiest place on earth to the public.

Happy birthday.
