Longtime readers of my blog will remember Puss.  That’s my little girl.   She used to be bigger.  Much bigger, in fact.  At one point, Puss weighed 12 lbs.  Today, she’s barely 4 lbs.  That’s because Puss is NOT doing well.  This afternoon, her pain will end…permanently.

Intestinal issues have severely affected her diet and caused her to lose a LOT of weight over the last 6 months or so.  What really ticks me off is that after spending over $2000 at an animal hospital I will NOT name in this blog, I’m no closer to knowing what the ailment truly is.  They just gave me a laundry list of “could bes.”

Like many older cats (Puss is 14 years-old), her back legs have been failing her.  It started with an occasional wobble.  Now, it’s constant falling.  She’s having a hard time getting around to her food and litterbox.  She literally drags herself up the stairs to greet me in the morning, which MUST be painful.  This afternoon, it’s MY turn to endure the pain.  Puss will be put to sleep.

I lost my first cat, Snowy when I was 16 years-old.  She was just 10 and suffering from kidney failure.  Just hours after we put her down, I had to work on the radio.  That was one crazy difficult show to do.  Today’s will be another.

I realize most of you have never met Puss.  Many have never even met me.  But, I hope you’ll take a minute and look at some of her pics below.  Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers today.  Pets are family…especially after so many years.  I’m having an extremely hard time dealing with this.  The only solace is that Puss will hurt no more after today.

Thank you so much for allowing me to vent.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is very hard to do what you are about to do but I am sure Puss will be in a much better place. Send her off in a peaceful and loving atmosphere. Just recently I had to do this same thing wilth my 20 year old cat, Cookie. My heart & thoughts go out to you today.

My heart aches for you, Jeffrey.
I believe, too, that our pets are very much beloved nenbers of our families. You’re in my prayers- I’ll ask God to bless you with comfort and peace.
After all, isn’t that what you’re blessing Puss with today? I’m quite sure that her devotion to you and love of you has earned her that comfort and peace.
    Thinking of you, Janean

i had to click on your blog.. after reading your blog i sat and cried at my desk at work.. i have been through this a few times, and it is always hard… as cat lady (and i take pride in that) who treats her kitties like babies, the hardest thing to do is to make this decision. know you are doing what is best for Puss.. although it will hurt your heart the last thing you could give her as owner and friend was a peaceful goodbye.. xoxoxo hugs to you

So sorry for your loss. I have been down that road of “We don’t really know what it is”. My Mom has a cat who is being treated for diabetes. Before the treatment his legs were also wobbly but now He is doing fine for the time being. I will keep you in my thoughts. I know it’s like losing a loved one in some cases it’s harder.

I am so sorry to hear about Puss. I too, have been down that road twice before, with my 18-year old Tia, and my 14-year old, Tango. There is a Rainbow Bridge where our pets go to wait for us to join them on the other side. My baby, Twilight, who is still with me and I will be joining her sisters some day, and we will all be together. Know that Puss will be waiting for you, too. My heart hurts just thinking about what you are going through

My heart is with you this afternoon. I know exactly how you feel as I have done this same things a couple times in the last few years. I still think of my “kids” daily.

  13. Gina Ladick says:

Jeffrey, I called you earlier today, I was the one w/a 21 year old cat that I lost when I was younger and now have 2 teenage daughters with cats that have FIV “Feline Immune Virus” and they are 9. I finally got a chance to look at Puss’s photos and story – I cried like a faucet, you can see her sole thru her eyes, what a beautifully, sweet cat. Its soo painful to watch them when they are ill but the pain it takes to put them to sleep is unexplainable. I’m so sorry about Puss and will keep you both in my prayers. We too have spent lotsa $ at vets who just are trying to make as much moola as they can. I’m not sure what part of the valley you live in but I drive 8 miles one way to a vet we found that is a total humanitarian and doesn’t work just to make the most money he can, so if you or anyone you know ever needs an honest, humanitarian to care for their pet please go to “Catalina Hospital” 35th Ave just North of Dunlap. Always keep her memories alive. My Best, Gina

Jeffery, I’m so sorry you have to do this. But she will no longer suffer. I have aYorkie who is 16. I had his mother till she was 16. I still miss her. And now its getting close to his time. I totally agree with the results from your vet. I did the same thing and also never got the truth on what was wrong. Thanks for sharing your pictures!! She is beautiful. Mary Beth

Your reference to “Puss” made me cry this AM. Thanks to you, she had a long, wonderful life. I have had many cats and it is never easy to say goodbye.
Take care and please save another cat or two, or three or four. I have four
and they are fabulous company always. .
