Birthdays today include The Chiffons‘ Barbara Lee (1947)[He’s So Fine, One Fine Day, Sweet Talking Guy], William Spooner of The Grateful Dead(1949)[Truckin’, Sugar Magnolia, Touch of Grey], Mr. Mister front man Richard Page(1953)[Broken Wings, Kyrie, Is It Love], and Janet Jackson(1966).

On the same day that Janet Jackson was born, The Beach Boys Pet Sounds was released.  Today it’s regarded as one of the best and most influential albums of all time, inspiring The Beatles to create Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.  But at the time,  sales of the album fell short of previous releases and expectations when it barely cracking the top 10.  Capitol Records panicked and almost immediately rushed out a Greatest Hits compilation which drove a wedge between the group and their label that would take years to heal.  When I spoke with Al Jardine in 2010 about the toughest Beach Boys sessions of all time, he quickly focused on one of the songs from Pet Sounds.
