Phoenix Comedy Festival

I laughed more last night than I have in ages.  Was it because of anything on television?  NOPE!  It was an event right here in the Valley.  I attended the Phoenix Comedy Festival at Symphony Hall.  We gave away free tickets on KOOL.  Did you go?  If so, I hope you made a donation.  It’s all for a pretty neat cause – one you may not have heard about before now!  I know I hadn’t.

There’s a non-profit organization called My Bill Of Rights.  Its goal is to erect monuments displaying our country’s Bill Of Rights.  I think everyone knows the first two:

  1. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
  2. A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

But, can you name the rest?  I know the 5th amendment lets me keep my mouth shut in court.  Though, I couldn’t tell you the exact wording.  These are our rights as Americans!  We NEED to know them.

Last night, an amazing lineup of comedians came to together (pro-bono) to raise money for a Bill Of Rights Memorial to be erected by the Arizona State Capitol.  And, these weren’t hack comedians, either.  Some of the best, most legendary and most influential were in the house!

Lewis Black, Bill Engvall, Kathleen Madigan, Steven Wright, Bobcat Goldthwait, Dick Gregory, Tommy Smothers and Father Guido Sarducci all believe in the cause.  What do YOU think?  Here’s more on the project:

Finally, I want to introduce you to the man who started this initiative, Chris Bliss.  Chris is a comedian who actually opened for the Jacksons‘ 1984 “Victory” tour!  He’s also an unbelievable juggler.  You’ve GOT to see this:
