GRAMMY Goes On A Diet

grammy GRAMMY Goes On A Diet

The GRAMMY Awards have become quite self-conscious.  It’s gone on a “diet,” losing over 30 categories!  Instead of 109 awards, there will be just 78 starting in 2012.  Sure, this could mean a shorter broadcast (not necessarily a bad thing).  But, the men will now battle the women in Pop, R&B and Country categories.  Imagine if this had been the case all along…

  • In 1973, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm]’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” won Best Male Pop Vocal.  [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Roberta Flack[/lastfm]’s “Killing Me Softly” was the women’s winner. Which would you choose?
  • In 1980, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kenny Loggins[/lastfm] took Best Male Pop Vocal honors with “This is It, while [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bette Midler[/lastfm] won the women’s award with “The Rose.” Who would win that grudge match?
  • In  1972, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]James Taylor[/lastfm]’s “You’ve Got a Friend” and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Carole King[/lastfm]’s “Tapestry” would have duked it out for the award.  That’s TOUGH!

Here’s what Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow had to say:
