Geddy Lee Performs "Freewill", 1981

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rush[/lastfm]’s Freewill(sometimes written incorrectly as Free Will”) is the second track from their 1980 album, Permanent Waves. Watch a performance of the song from 1981, showing that unlike a lot of groups, Rush can put together a live show that sounds every bit as good as the studio version.

Rush singer [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Geddy Lee[/lastfm], never one to avoid the high notes, has mentioned that Freewill is one of the more demanding songs in Rush’s catalog for him to sing. Apparently, the remarkable notes he hits near the end are at the very top of his vocal range.

The song’s lyrics themselves are a bit more meaty than what usually passes for philosophy in rock lyrics. They assert that free will itself is not a gift, but a choice, and that even the attempt to evade choosing is in and of itself a choice.
