John Stone was working as a car salesman at Webb Chevrolet in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn. He says he wore the Packers tie Monday to honor his late grandmother, who was a big Green Bay fan.

Stone said that when he showed up at work, general manager Jerry Roberts called him over to his office and then ordered him to take off the Packers tie or else he would be fired. Stone said he thought Roberts was joking and went back to work.

An hour later, Stone said, Roberts came to the showroom floor and again demanded he take off the tie. When he didn’t, he was fired, Stone said.

“I didn’t know you could get fired for wearing a tie,” said Stone, 34, of Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood. “I’m supposed to dress up. I’m a car salesman.”

Roberts, obviously, has a different story.

The GM says his dealership has worked on promotions involving the Bears, and he was afraid the tie could alienate the team’s fans and make it harder to sell cars.

Roberts adds that Stone was offered five chances to take of the tie and refused to do it.

If the guy was asked to take off the tie 5 times it was his own fault.
Why didn’t you tell the [people that part??

I guess it’s a he said he said thing. The guy who was fired thought his boss was joking around…I mean who fires someone for the tie they choose…???

Sounds like The Boss has bad sportsmanship & is a sore loser. Does the work/dress code policy say he can’t wear the Packer tie. Come on get real!!! Sad that their are Bosses that take sports to the extreme.

If someone said to me if I didn’t do something I was going to be fired– an reasonable man would ask are you joking!! But what I want to know is why when you were on the air did you not inform your listeners that they ask him to take off the tie 5 times?? that is not responsible reporting is it?
