The Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System will pay tribute to veterans who were Prisoners of War (POW) and those who remain Missing In Action (MIA) in a special ceremony, tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 17, at 9:30A.M.

The third Friday of each September is the traditional commemoration of the POW-MIA observance each year.

va Dont Forget Them! The POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Former POWs and other veterans will attend.

The ceremony includes presentation of colors and comments by Phoenix VA Health Care System Director Gabriel Perez.

Phoenix VA Health Care System in the Chapel, located off the 7th Street entrance of the hospital (650 East Indian School Road). Enter through the Community Living Center (CLC). Enter the CLC from the Seventh Street side of the Medical Center, near the Main Entrance.More than 140,000 Americans were captured and interned during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, the Somalia and Kosovo conflicts, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Not included in this figure are nearly 93,000 Americans who were lost or never recovered. Approximately 29,000 POWs are still living.

Former American POWs are eligible for special veterans’ benefits, including enrollment in VA medical care for treatment in VA hospitals and clinics without co-payments, as well as disability compensation for select injuries and diseases that generally have been associated with internment.

These benefits are in addition to regular veterans’ benefits and services to which they are entitled. Former POWs can call 1-800-827-1000 and ask to speak to the Former POW Coordinator at the VA regional office nearest their home, or they can apply online at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp.
